Leafs Sign Paul Ranger To One-Year, One-Million Dollar Deal

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed free agent Paul Ranger to a one-year deal that is worth $1-million. Ranger spent most of his time last year with the Leafs’ AHL Affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. He played 270 games between 2005 and 2010 with the Tampa Bay Lightning, before taking a two-year leave of absence.

This is a good signing by the Leafs, as I think Ranger can be the shutdown guy on defense that the Leafs need. The issue, however, is the Leafs only have $5-million left in cap space and still have Nazem Kadri, Cody Franson and Mark Fraser to sign. So while they did make a good signing, they are left in a pickle as they do not have much money to spend on these key players.

Ranger tallied eight goals and 25 points last year in 51 games played for the Marlies.
