Leafs Re-Sign Carl Gunnarsson To Three-Year Deal

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Toronto Maple Leafs have re-signed defenseman Carl Gunnarsson to a three-year contract extension worth $9.45 million.

Gunnarsson had filed for salary arbitration, but obviously a hearing won’t be necessary now.

The 26-year-old had one goal and 14 assists in 37 regular season games with the Maple Leafs this past season, and added one assist in seven playoff games. In 224 career regular-season games with the Leafs, Gunnarsson has put up 12 goals and 57 assists for 69 points.

The Leafs selected the 6-foot-2, 196 pound Swede 189th overall in the 2007 NHL draft.

Gunnarsson came in at a reasonable cap hit of $3.15 million, which now leaves the Leafs with around $6.5 million left in cap space to re-sign RFAs Nazem Kadri, Cody Franson and Mark Fraser.

In other news…

The Leafs announced their affiliation with the East Coast Hockey League’s Orlando Solar Bears.

Toronto will join the Minnesota Wild in supplying prospects to the Solar Bears’ roster.
