Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet indicated on Twitter recently that the Toronto Maple Leafs could have an interest in moving up in the draft to grab Edmonton’s 7th overall pick. He went on to speculate that the Oilers could be asking for a defenseman in return to make the deal happen.
Although it’s just speculation, Kypreos also Tweeted out a photo of General Managers Dave Nonis and Craig MacTavish speaking after a GM’s meeting for about 10 minutes. Whether or not they were talking about a deal is anyone’s guess, but a trade along those lines wouldn’t be that farfetched.
Edmonton is thin on the blue line and with three straight number one picks the Oilers are stocked full of young talent. Adding a solid top four defenseman who has some National Hockey League experience could be just what the squad needs to finally get them back to the playoffs. Let’s also not discount Dallas Eakins’ role in all of this. The new Oilers coach would be very familiar with all the Leaf blue liners due to his time coaching in Toronto.
