Canucks Reportedly Ask Leafs About Eakins

The Vancouver Canucks have asked the Toronto Maple Leafs for permission to speak to Toronto Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins about their vacant coaching position according to Hockey Night in Canada. The Canucks are looking for a new bench boss after relieving long-time coach Alain Vigneault of his duties last week.

Eakins has been a hot prospect in recent years for the work he has done down with the Marlies and for how he has developed many of the current players on the Maple Leafs roster. He still has two years left on his AHL contract, but there is a clause in the deal that allows him to pursue NHL options during the summer.

The Canucks and the Dallas Stars currently have openings to fill and there are some strong candidates other than Eakins available as well. Lindy Ruff who was let go by the Buffalo Sabres earlier this season is interested in returning behind the bench, and Vigneault himself figures to get a look in Dallas.
