The Grand Rapids Griffins defeated the Houston Aeros last night in the deciding game of their opening round series 7-0, which means they will now move on to face the Toronto Marlies. The Marlies have been off since Wednesday after sweeping the Rochester Americans in the opening round for the second straight season.
The Griffins should prove a tougher test for the Marlies. Grand Rapids is the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings and boasts talented prospects like Tomas Tatar and Jan Mursak. The two combined for three goals in the series clinching game against Houston on Saturday. The Griffins also finished just behind the Marlies in third spot in the Western Conference standings this season.
The series will kickoff this Friday night in Toronto and the Marlies will host games 1 and 2, as well as 6 and 7 if necessary. Toronto posted a 2-0-0-2 record against Grand Rapids in 2012-13.
