The Toronto Marlies have advanced to the second round of the American Hockey League playoffs after sweeping the Rochester Americans three games to none. The Americans are the AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres and this is now the second straight year the Marlies have swept them in the opening round.
Despite being out shot 39-30, Toronto was able to pick up the 3-2 overtime victory on Wednesday night thanks to the stellar play of goaltender Drew MacIntyre. The Marlies netminder is now 3-0 in the post-season and made one of the most spectacular saves you will ever see, in game one of the series.
The Americans did not go quietly in the deciding game and forward Nick Tarnasky tied the score at two late in the third period to force overtime. Just over five minutes into the extra session, however, Will Acton redirected a point shot from Kevin Marshall to clinch the series for the Marlies.
Toronto is the first team to advance to the second round and will now get some well needed rest while waiting to find out who they will play next.
