The Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings will indeed meet in a Winter Classic, but it will take place a year later than originally scheduled. The lockout cancelled the game between the two teams that was supposed to take place this past January at Michigan Stadium. However, the contest has been rescheduled for New Years Day of 2014.
An announcement is scheduled to take place this Sunday at Joe Louis Arena and each team will also unveil throwback jerseys that will be used during the Winter Classic. A crowd of about 110,000 will be expected for the game.
Although having the game cancelled this year was no doubt disappointing for fans, playing it next year will have special meaning. The Red Wings will be moving to the Eastern Conference next season and that will make the two Original Six squads division rivals once again.
The only downside for Leaf fans is with the firing of Brian Burke, they won’t get a chance to see his antics on HBO’s 24/7 leading up to the game.
