Toronto Maple Leaf prospect Morgan Rielly will join the Toronto Marlies later on in the week. Rielly had been playing with the WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors, but their season ended this weekend when they failed to crack the playoffs. The defenseman is expected to join the Marlies on Wednesday.
Rielly, a 19-year-old, was one of the final cuts at Toronto’s training camp back in January. He had 12 goals and 54 points in 2012-13 with Moose Jaw. Rielly was selected fifth overall by the Leafs in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
Rielly should be able to provide some assistance to the Marlies who are currently pushing towards the AHL playoffs. They lead their division and sit third in the Western Conference standings at the moment.
The addition of Rielly and the acquisition of defenseman Kevin Marshall last week will only fuel speculation that Jake Gardiner’s call-up to the Maple Leafs could be imminent.
