Sidney Crosby, perhaps sick of all the lockout nonsense, has decided to give ball hockey a shot. Well, sort of. Crosby strapped on the pads last weekend at a local men’s league game in Pittsburgh. Crosby said he has a friend that plays in the league and the team was looking for a goalie. Since he played a lot of street hockey goalie growing up, Crosby volunteered for the assignment.
The coolest thing about this story is that he played the entire game incognito. The opposing squad didn’t know it was Crosby in goal until after the game. Imagine how upset you would be if you were just going through the motions out there, because you didn’t know the best player in the world was between the pipes. As opposed to doing everything you could to tell your kids one day that you scored on Crosby.
Apparently this wasn’t just a token appearance for Crosby and he is a pretty good goalie. He recorded the shutout in his team’s 4-0 victory. Even so, I don’t think Marc-Andre Fleury’s job will be in jeopardy anytime soon.
If the lockout has done any good, and that is a big “if”, it has given us plenty of stories like this where players have interacted with fans in unique ways.
