With the Fifth Pick in the 2012 Draft, The Leafs Take Morgan Reilly

The high flying defensemen from the Western Hockey League instantly became the strangest pick that was made in this years draft.  The Leafs alleged strength is their defensive depth, and they have a glaring need in both goal and at Centre, but Brian Burke chose to take a defender with the fifth selection.  In fairness to Burke, central scouting had Reilly ranked fifth in the final rankings, and he was in the top ten of most experts lists.  The issue at hand is whether or not the player addresses the need, which would have been resulted in the selection of a forward.  On the flip side, Burke now has additional defenders to use in terms of trading for the biggest needs.

In any event, welcome to the Maple Leafs Morgan Reilly.  We look forward to seeing you in two to three seasons with the big club.
