That’s right everyone, Brian Burke finally gave in. As first reported by @HockeyBreak on Twitter last night, the well known Maple Leafs general manager has officially joined the fast growing social media website. I, for one, am so excited to read his tweets. He’s already tweeted twice and (as of 3:50pm EST) has 6, 153 followers. Some of the more notable followers include: CBC Insider Elliotte Friedman, Leafs forward Colby Armstrong, Leafs blogger/vlogger Steve Dangle and, of course, the official Maple Leafs account. One of the more surprising followers is St. Louis Blues forward David Perron. Obviously his number of followers and notable followers will continue to grow in the coming hours and days as I’ve already seen it grow from 1,500 to now close to 7,000.
Usually when someone joins Twitter, it’s not a huge deal, but this is significant for a couple reasons. For one, it’s Brian Burke. He’s said before that he isn’t the most technology savvy person, and even said that he doesn’t have an iPod. Another reason is that there are so few GMs on Twitter at the moment. Burke is only the 3rd GM to join Twitter with Canucks GM Mike Gillis and Blue Jackets honcho Scott Howson being the other two.
Burke has been pressured by many members of the Toronto media, and people in the Maple Leafs organization to join Twitter and Burke had always refused. More recently saying “Right now, I only tweet when I have beans for supper.” But, someone or something must have pushed him over the edge to join.
Burke joins a host of Maple Leafs on Twitter. Players that are on Twitter include Phil Kessel (@PKessel81), linemate Joffrey Lupul (@JLupul), Tyler Bozak (@Bozie42), Jake Gardiner (@Jgardiner272) and Nazem Kadri (@43_Kadri). One would also think that his good friend Ron Wilson (@coachrw63) probably was a huge factor in him joining too. Again, you can follow Mr. Burke at @LeafsBB20.
