Some Angst Over Boyce's Demotion

As you’ve noticed, we’re slowly working on getting our new writers up and running here. While we work out the kinks, here’s a few thoughts from Doug McCoy:

I am not happy that Darryl Boyce was cut by the Leafs. Actually, that’s an understatement. I am downright ticked off. If there was ever a player that epitomized, heart, guts, grit, & intestinal fortitude it was Daryl Boyce. Who can forget the nostril
picture? He was even putting his body on the line during the PRE SEASON.

I don’t think I am going too far out on a limb when I say that all passionate hockey fans admire the aforementioned qualities. I’ll even wager a depreciating stack of C notes that Brian Burke, he of the penchant for truculence, is a huge fan of the heart & soul qualities
that Boyce has oozing out of his ears. What makes the cut even more puzzling, shocking & outrageous is that Boyce lost his roster spot to Colton Orr & Jay Rosehill! Notice that it wasn’t to a skill player or a slick skating Jake Gardiner clone.

A quick review of the stats only serves to stoke my outrage. Boyce was a +8 through 46 games! He scored 13 pts, & logged 11:22 minutes of ice time. Orr & Rosehill put up a combined 5 pts while logging just 5 minutes of ice time. Oh yeah, they were both in the
minus category, -1 & -6. Can you say defensive liabilities? I guess the fighting/enforcer aspect carried a lot more weight than I thought it did. Even so, to keep both of those guys over Boyce is, well, you get the picture. What kind of message does this send to the
team? Me thinks it’s not a good one.

Love the Steckel trade. Cheap (4th rounder,1.1 mil) & directly addresses the PK. I have a feeling that one of Gunnarson or Franson could be on the way out. Cant wait ‘till opening day. Go Leafs!
