Sorry for getting to this so late, but I couldn’t let it pass without mentioning. Just about every hockey site in the world has already gone over it, so I won’t attempt to be breaking news source here, but the terrible tragedy that struck the KHL team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, despite happening continents away, hits home for Leaf fans, too. Former Leafs Igor Korolev and Alexander Karpovtsev were both assistant coaches for the club, leading a team that included a number of other former NHLers, Karlis Skrastins, Karel Rachunek and Pavol Demitra among them.
The tragedy is one of the greatest that has ever occurred in the world of sports, let alone hockey, with nearly an entire team wiped out in a single moment. Something that the FanSided NHL network will be doing to honor the memory of these athletes who were taken too soon is a #KHLmomentofsilence on Twitter at 9:00 AM. While it will do little to ease the hurt that must be felt by those deeply touched by this horrible accident, in some small way, it will allow us all to pay our respects. It may seem trivial to some, but in a world where social media often has such a large impact, it will be nice to see it used for something other than bashing Eklund’s latest trade rumor or listening to Jose Canseco lose his mind one tweet at a time.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all the family members of the victims.
