Gameday Preview: New Jersey at Toronto

With the news that Jiggy will not be back in business for at least a week or two, tonight’s game against the struggling New Jersey Devils is an excellent chance for Jonas Gustavsson to prove his merits as a true number one goaltender. The Devils might actually be in worse shape than the Leafs this season, especially with Zach Parise out of the lineup long-term, but Ilya Kovalchuk is a dangerous scorer at any time, and the Devils should not be taken lightly.

While the other night’s win was a huge morale boost, don’t forget this team came out and played like garbage in the first period, and a miraculous effort in the later periods saved the day, along with the parade of Predators to the penalty box. The Leafs do need to continue to get back to basics, demonstrate a full 60-minute effort and hammer away at a reeling Devils team. Martin Brodeur is 4-9-1 on the season with a 2.73 GAA, hardly the numbers you’d have expected from the future Hall-of-Famer. He’s given up six goals over his last two games, an overtime win against Edmonton and a shutout loss to the Bruins.

That’s all I got for now, I’m on the run with a bunch of other stuff today. Go Leafs!
