As it’s already been reported from a couple different sources today, Jean-Sebastien Giguere is expected to miss at least two games due to the groin injury he suffered in last night’s win against Nashville. He’ll undergo an MRI in the meantime, to gain a better understanding of the full extent of his injury, although from all accounts of how the injury occurred and what Jiggy related to his coaches, this is more a precautionary measure than one of necessity. Ron Wilson remarked last night, “He came to the bench and said his groin was tight and he wasn’t comfortable. He wasn’t sure he should try and finish the game with his past with this. So Jonas went and he made two or three great saves and that was huge.”
With Jiggy out of the question, the Monster will get his first chance at an extended string of starts, beginning with New Jersey tomorrow. Gustavsson’s played pretty well so far, although his numbers aren’t great. A 1-3-1 record, with a 2.85 GAA and .902 save percentage won’t win you any Vezina Trophies, but Gustavsson has looked much improved over his rookie season.
James Reimer will be called up from the AHL to back up Gustavsson. Reimer is 5-3-0 on the year with the Marlies, and has posted a very solid .918 save percentage. Jussi Rynnas has been very good as well, but with no real expectations that whoever was called up would be forced to play, it’s just as good for him to stay in the AHL and continue his development.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Per Mike Augello, Jiggy’s injury is severe enough that it will keep him out of commission for at least the next 1-2 weeks.
